Symbiosis was established in 2004 to invest in emerging Life Science technologies.
Symbiosis's objective is to provide investors with an opportunity to participate in some of the outstanding life science discoveries emanating from The University of Queensland. By creating a portfolio of high quality life science investments, Symbiosis intends to mitigate the inherent risk in investing in single technologies for success.
In December 2004, Symbiosis entered into a Life Sciences Pipeline Access Agreement with UniQuest Pty Limited, the main commercialisation entity of The University of Queensland.
Under this Pipeline Access Agreement, UniQuest grants Symbiosis a joint "first look" right with Uniseed and an exclusive "lock out" period of up to 90 days to invest in all new life science companies commercialising discoveries and innovations:
arising from research expenditure at The University of Queensland, which approximates $100 million per year;
developed in the Life Science Faculties, which incorporate the schools/disciplines of Agriculture and Horticulture, Anatomy, Botany, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Physiology & Pharmacology, Veterinary Sciences and Medicine;
developed by UQ staff clinicians and scientists located at the Royal Brisbane Hospital campus, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital, Greenslopes Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital.
Whilst Symbiosis will invest in discoveries arising from The University of Queensland, it will also invest opportunities from outside of this catchment.
